Back in November, NEPSI and Neeltran Inc. – both a part of the American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) family – attended the Copper 2025 Conference in Arizona. As a team, Scott Nelson, Alexander Steciuk, and Rodrigo Dünner presented a technical paper outlining the critical roles of Transformer-Rectifiers and Harmonic Filters in Copper Electrowinning (EW) and Refining plants.

• 📈 Grid Stability & Power Quality: We explored how integrating Transformer-Rectifiers, Harmonic Filters, and Capacitor banks is essential for maintaining grid stability and high operational reliability in copper processing facilities.

• ✅ Compliance & Cost Management: Our paper highlights the transition from lenient grid guidelines to modern, rigorous IEEE 519 standards. We examined the impact of poor power factors, specifically significant utility penalties, and how harmonics could compromise the performance and durability of critical electrical equipment.

• 💡 Advanced Mitigation Strategies: We presented a range of solutions to minimize electrical distortion, including multi-pulse rectifier configurations (12, 18, and 24-pulse), phase-shifting techniques, and multi-stage, multi-tuned harmonic filters.

• 🏭 The Holistic View: A primary recommendation is the implementation of plant-wide harmonic filters at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This approach not only protects sensitive equipment but also optimizes overall energy costs and system efficiency.
