Medium Voltage Pole-Top
Capacitor Banks

NEPSI’s MVPTCä (Medium Voltage Pole-Mounted Capacitor Bank) are designed and constructed for application on utility and industrial power systems for the purpose of power factor correction, voltage control, and loss reduction.  Banks are available from 150 kvar to 3000 kvar at voltage levels from 2400 volts to 34.5 kV. The banks are completely prewired at the factory with a variety of control options and accessories to simplify installation and meet customer control requirements.
Product Scope and Benefits

  • Bank voltages of 2.4kV through 34.5kV
  • Ratings to 1200 kvar at 2.4kV and 3000 kvar at 12.47kV through 34.5kV.
  • Improved voltage regulation, power factor control, and loss reduction.
  • Low initial cost when compared to pad-mounted and metal-enclosed capacitor banks.
  • Complete installation packages are available upon request.
  • Low real-estate usage.

Figure 1 - Typical poletop capacitor bank installation. The current/voltage monitoring insulator or PT/CT provides a control signal to the control box for automatic operation of the vacuum/oil switches. The cutouts provide overcurrent protection and also provide a visible disconnect during maintenance.

Application

The MVPTC™ is designed for three phase utility distribution feeders and medium voltage supply entrances to commercial and industrial power systems.  It is an inexpensive alternative to pad-mounted and metal-enclosed capacitor banks when space is not available. Trained medium voltage technicians are required for their maintenance and operation as hot-sticks and work in close proximity to the high voltage conductors is required. Customers who do not employ trained medium voltage technicians should strongly consider the application of metal-enclosed automatic capacitor banks.

Standard Features

Rack
All-welded all-aluminum 3 inch web channel construction for cantilever pole mounting on standard utility class wooden poles.  Standard ground study for #6 soft drawn copper.  Three capacitor and 6 capacitor rack designs available.  Six cell racks available on units supplied with three cells to allow for expansion.

Capacitors
The capacitors are a low loss, all-film, double bushing, design with ANSI gray stainless steel tanks.  Capacitors are connected in wye for optional grounding by customer  Capacitors produce rated kvar at rated voltage and frequency. Capacitors comply with all applicable NEMA and ANSI/IEEE standards. Internal discharge resistors reduce residual voltage in capacitors to less than 50 volts within 5 minutes of de-energiztion. Dielectric fluid is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, non PCB with low toxicity.

Control Package
The pole-top banks can be supplied with a variety of control options. See table 1 below for further information.

Switches
Three single phase, 15kV group operated oil switches (optional vacuum switches available) are supplied with the pole-top bank.  A rack mounted aluminum junction box simplifies wiring to the control box at base of pole.

Control Box
Pad locking NEMA 3R is supplied as standard for mounting at base of pole.

Fault Current Rating
Capacitors have a 10,000 amp fault current handling capability.

Operating Temperature
-46F (-40C) to +115F (+46C)

Warranty
5 year replacement on the rack and 1 year replacement on the capacitors.  Optional extended warranties available on request.

Miscellaneous Accessories and Options

Cross Arm/Cross Arm Brace (CC)
An industry standard cross arm and cross arm brace can be provide with the capacitor rack for mounting surge arresters and cutouts as shown in figure 1.

Voltage/Current Monitor Insulator (VCMI)
This insulator provides a voltage and current signal for the optional voltage, power factor, and var controllers.

Vacuum Switches (VS)
Are a more reliable, maintenance free alternative to the oil switches that are supplied with the standard rack. These switches are virtually maintenance free and are most suitable for banks equipped with automatic controllers.
Control Power Transformer (CPT)
An outdoor control transformer can be provide to supply control power to the capacitor switches and switching controls.  Control can also be provide for voltage sensing required by the optional voltage, power factor,  and var controllers.

Transient Inrush Reactors (TIR)
These reactors minimize switch wear and transients voltages and currents resulting from capacitor energization.  Reactors are rated 40 mH.  Reactors easily install on the terminals of the capacitors.

Lightning Arresters
(LA)
Heavy duty distribution class lightning arresters can be provide for surge protection of the capacitor bank and associated components.
